Dugas, USA TODAY
Though Chattanooga hit a slowdown in home sales in
January, the city has largely avoided much of the mortgage crisis that has
struck many other parts of the nation.
"We are experiencing a little bit of a correction in the
market," says Pam Duffy, president of the Chattanooga Association of Realtors.
January, she adds, is typically a sluggish month.
As is true elsewhere, the local mortgage market hasn't been
able to keep pace with 2006, when home sales hit the highest point in the city's
history. Sales have been gradually declining to what experts see as a more
realistic level. From December 2006 through December 2007, sales fell by 19%.
Even so, 2007 was Chattanooga's third-best year ever for home sales.
